At the age of five I sang “Esta noche voy a verla” and “El Noa Noa” at family events. I continue to listen to those songs today—I still can’t get enough of Juan Gabriel. In fact, I always dreamt of singing with him accompanied by a mariachi and an accordion. He has been my songwriting and singing inspiration. No other artist has thrilled me more than Juan Gabriel. When I was a toddler I saw him perform at a festival in Chihuahua where I was born. My state adopted him as a native son. El Divo de Juárez spent many years of his career in Chihuahua. He wrote various songs about Chihuahua, his adopted land.
Two years ago I attended his show at a venue in Chicago and it was spectacular. Seguía con una energía increíble ya que se presentó por lo menos dos horas. Me sorprendió ver público de todas edades, desde jovencitos hasta gente de la tercera edad. No cualquier artista logra esa diversidad.
Lo admiro como músico porque siempre fue multifacético, aparte de tener muchas canciones que se interpretaban con orquesta sinfónica y de cámara, también adaptaba sus composiciones a distintos géneros tales como el mariachi, banda, son, rock y la música norteña.
His songs were mostly witty or funny, expressing the realities of everyday life. “No tengo dinero” and “Caray” are perfect examples. The former is about a poor boy who has nothing to offer but love. This song has been interpreted by many artists not only in Spanish but also in Italian and German. Juan Gabriel also recorded a Japanese and Portuguese version of this song. The latter speaks about a relationship that didn’t last because his lover left him for an older rich man and thus never found happiness.
Él agregó mucha ternura y melancolía al interpretar sus temas con mariachi. Inclusive le dio un toque más “femenino” al género. Por lo anterior, apoyó a las mujeres intérpretes que hoy día forman parte de lasgrandes voces femeninas del mariachi, como Lucha Villa, Rocío Durcal y Lola Beltrán. Sus composiciones jamás enaltecieron las adicciones ni la violencia. Sus canciones se enfocan en el amor y desamor, y lo hacía con tanta pasión que sus palabras removían cualquier emoción que sus letras implicaran. Sus composiciones también proyectan gran parte del folklore mexicano. En pocas palabras, fue un artista y ser humano muy optimista.
De acuerdo a sus entrevistas, no cabe duda que era un ser que tenía los pies en la tierra. Sabía cómo defenderse con dignidad y respetando a los entrevistadores.
I was looking forward to his show next month in Chicago. It was going to be the perfect birthday gift. Juan Gabriel, me alegraste muchas veces, te fuiste muy pronto y aunque no logre trabajar contigo me seguirás inspirando. Para mí siempre seguirás vivo.
